How to Care for Your Septic Tank
Regularly Empty the Septic Tank
Preventing overfilling and overflow is essential for maintaining your septic tank. The frequency of emptying depends on the tank size, number of household members, and water usage.
Typically, pumping is done every 3-4 weeks by hiring a specialized waste removal company.
To avoid unexpected overflow, it’s helpful to install a fill-level sensor. This can prevent unpleasant issues such as tank contents spilling outside.
Ensure Proper Ventilation
Anaerobic processes in the septic tank produce harmful gases, such as methane and hydrogen sulfide. These gases can be hazardous to human health and can also negatively affect the tank itself.
Ventilating the septic tank (e.g., by installing vent pipes above ground) allows for safe gas release and helps control the internal pressure.
Monitor What Goes Into the Tank
Do not dispose of non-biodegradable items (such as plastic, textiles) in the septic tank, nor should you put in grease, oils, food scraps, medications, tissues, diapers, or strong chemicals.
These types of waste can cause blockages in the plumbing, lead to quicker filling and “swelling” of waste in the tank, and result in problematic scum forming on the surface.
Fortunately, biopreparations that support septic tank performance can handle a certain amount of unwanted substances.
Choose the Right Cleaning Products
Strong detergents can significantly weaken the beneficial bacteria responsible for breaking down waste, thus disrupting the biological decomposition process.
Use eco-friendly, mild cleaning products that do not interfere with natural biological processes in the tank.
Use Septic Tank Bacteria
Environmentally friendly biopreparations are one of the most effective ways to maintain a septic tank in good condition.
BIOLATRIN® is a 100% natural biopreparation containing selected bacteria and enzymes that support the natural function of both septic tanks and home wastewater treatment systems.
It’s easy and convenient to use—just use the included measuring scoop and pour it into the toilet.
Additionally, BIOLATRIN® eliminates unpleasant odors.
