How to Speed Up Composting
Use the Right Ratios
The key to fast composting is maintaining the right balance between “brown” materials (dry, carbon-rich materials like leaves and straw) and “green” materials (moist, nitrogen-rich items like grass and vegetable scraps). The ideal ratio is 3:1—three parts brown materials to one part green.
Also, try to limit hard-to-compost items, such as bones, meat, and fats.
Shred Compost Materials
Shredding organic waste, especially larger branches or leaves, speeds up decomposition. The smaller the compost ingredients, the more efficiently bacteria and other organisms can process them.
Layer the Compost
Layering compost by alternating “green” and “brown” materials improves airflow and accelerates decomposition. Layering also helps maintain balanced moisture and aeration levels.
Check the Temperature
Temperature in the compost bin greatly impacts the speed of decomposition. Placing the compost bin in a sunny spot or using a cover during colder days can help maintain a higher temperature, which promotes faster composting.
Compost activators can also support the composting process, even in winter.
Maintain Proper Moisture
The compost should be neither too dry nor too wet. The ideal moisture level is when the compost material is as damp as a wrung-out sponge. If the compost is too dry, decomposition slows down; if too wet, mold may develop. Lightly water the compost if you notice it starting to dry out.
At the same time, avoid over-wetting or allowing water to flood the compost bin.
Aerate Regularly
When organic materials decompose without access to air, the composting process slows and may produce unpleasant odors. Turning the compost every one to two weeks helps speed up the process by providing essential oxygen to composting bacteria.
A simple garden fork or rake is sufficient for this task.
Use a Compost Activator
One of the most effective ways to speed up composting is by using specialized composting products, like Ekokompost™, which we produce.
This 100% natural product contains selected composting bacteria that significantly accelerate the breakdown of organic waste.
Additionally, Ekokompost™ eliminates unpleasant odors and works effectively in both low and high temperatures, so you can achieve rich compost even in winter.
Simply sprinkle the activator over your compost, add water, and turn the layers periodically.
